When someone thinks of a computer,
generally, you think of a screen, keyboard, mouse and a CPU (Central
Processing Unit). But nowadays, a computer can be a desktop (above example),
laptop, phone, tablet, smart TV, Ultra book, etc. this has only been possible
because the size of transistors has decreased rapidly throughout the years.
When computers first came out there were not for commercial use because they
were very expensive and very large because of the size of the transistors.
Today's computers have decreased in size even though now the number of
transistors has been increased to millions for faster processing speeds and
more efficient computers. The transformation from the first computer to today's
Ultra book is amazing because of the sheer size difference of the two. The only
reason this has been possible is because the fabrication of transistors has
evolved and made the hardware of a computer a lot more compact. The transistors
today use a lot less silicon because of the advanced fabrication and therefore
are a lot smaller. This will most likely not continue because the transistors
have already become so small so fast that it only gets more difficult to
decrease the size over the years. So, it is expected that our technology
advancement of computers will not change as much as it has in the past. Though
anything is possible and maybe in the near future we will have computers that
we can't even imagine today.
