Types of Computers

When someone thinks of a computer, generally, you think of a screen, keyboard, mouse and a CPU (Central Processing Unit). But nowadays, a computer can be a desktop (above example), laptop, phone, tablet, smart TV, Ultra book, etc. this has only been possible because the size of transistors has decreased rapidly throughout the years. When computers first came out there were not for commercial use because they were very expensive and very large because of the size of the transistors. Today's computers have decreased in size even though now the number of transistors has been increased to millions for faster processing speeds and more efficient computers. The transformation from the first computer to today's Ultra book is amazing because of the sheer size difference of the two. The only reason this has been possible is because the fabrication of transistors has evolved and made the hardware of a computer a lot more compact. The transistors today use a lot less silicon because of the advanced fabrication and therefore are a lot smaller. This will most likely not continue because the transistors have already become so small so fast that it only gets more difficult to decrease the size over the years. So, it is expected that our technology advancement of computers will not change as much as it has in the past. Though anything is possible and maybe in the near future we will have computers that we can't even imagine today.

Operating Systems

Many people think computer science is just programming but they don’t realise that without computer science none of the technology we have today would exist. One of the many things that we use in our daily lives that are only possible with computer programming is operating systems. Operating systems such as Windows 8 and Apple’s IOS would not exist if it wasn’t for programming. Behind the interface and all the buttons and features are lots of lines of code that give each button a function. There are many types of coding languages and each has there advantages and disadvantages. One type of programming is object oriented programming. Object oriented programming is very useful for creating an interface with many buttons and features because they are all treated as individual objects that relate to each other. Once all the objects are on the desired panel or screen the functionality of each button and feature has to be programmed in a coding language such as java. Another common language that is used for object oriented programming is C++. Without computer science and programming the hardware of a computer would be useless, for example when we type something on a keyboard it is the coding that tells the computer what to do. This is a very brief description on operating systems and how important computer science is in our world today.

Computer Science at Kwantlen

Growing up in the decade were computers were just being introduced and not widely used compared today can be very challenging for many. The generations born after 2000 have a greater advantage over the generations of the 90’s or 80’s. Technology has seen a significant amount of advancement in just the last decade, with the introduction of powerful processing chips, motherboards, hard drives, video cards etc. In some manner this can be regarded as positive change for the newer minds of coming generations as they will be able to adopt to the well advanced technology from an earlier age rather than struggling like the previous generations. This gives an upper hand to the younger generation as they have a head start with understanding the use of this technology and are able to take it one step further by making innovations to the previous technology to take it to whole new levels. However, I also regard this as a negative as the generations of today will be greatly dependent on technology when it even comes to smaller things such as cleaning, building, and driving. We will definitely continue to see major improvements to technology in the coming future, however we need to make sure that we do not rely too much on technology.

About me

My name is Charn Rai and I live in Delta, BC. I've lived here my whole life. Currently, I'm enrolled in the Criminology Diploma program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. My career goal is to be a lawyer. I like to play ice hockey, soccer, and go to the gym.

I like researching new cars and want to own a Maserati Gran Turismo one day. I love to be physically active and don't like long classes. I also want to buy a Presa Canario one day.
